These coins were struck for Israel's first circulation issue, produced before the state had established its own mint — manufacturing was contracted to the Imperial Coin & Medal Co. in Birmingham. The series launched amid active war, with Israeli independence declared in May 1948 and the Arab-Israeli War ongoing throughout the entire production window. The aluminum-magnesium alloy was a deliberate economic choice for a government with no monetary reserves and an immediate need for functional coinage.
KM#8 is known with two date varieties corresponding to the Jewish years 5708 and 5709.
