| Obverse description | Central device consists of a stylized cluster of grapes with leaves, evoking ancient Judean coinage of the Bar-Kokhba Revolt (132–135 CE). The legend יִשְׂרָאֵל (Israel) appears in Hebrew above the device, and اسرائيل (Israel) in Arabic below, both inscriptions running along the inner rim. These coins were struck for Israel's first circulation issue, produced before the state had established its own mint — manufacturing was contracted to the Imperial Coin & Medal Co. in Birmingham. The series launched amid active war, with Israeli independence declared in May 1948 and the Arab-Israeli War ongoing throughout the entire production window. The aluminum-magnesium alloy was a deliberate economic choice for a government with no monetary reserves and an immediate need for functional coinage.
KM#8 is known with two date varieties corresponding to the Jewish years 5708 and 5709.
