Nigeria decimalized its currency on January 1, 1973, replacing the pound system with the naira and kobo. The 25 kobo occupied an awkward middle position in the new coinage hierarchy, and the series was relatively short-lived — by the late 1970s, inflation had already begun eroding the purchasing power that made smaller-denomination coins worth producing in copper-nickel rather than cheaper alloys.
