Drupsteen's design for this note was a deliberate break from the portrait-based tradition that had defined Dutch banknote design for generations. De Nederlandsche Bank commissioned him specifically to push the series in an entirely new direction, and the result divided opinion sharply when it entered circulation — the abstract treatment struck many users as closer to a postage stamp or art print than money.
Enschedé had printed Dutch notes continuously since the eighteenth century, and the technical relationship between the bank and the Haarlem press was essentially institutional muscle memory by 1989. The robin series ran until the guilder's retirement upon euro adoption in 2002.
