Issued to commemorate the inauguration of the François Duvalier International Airport in Port-au-Prince, this piece was struck during the early years of Jean-Claude Duvalier's rule — he had inherited the presidency from his father in April 1971 at age nineteen, making him one of the youngest heads of state in the world at the time. The airport itself had been renamed for the elder Duvalier while he was still alive, a vanity the regime pursued aggressively across public infrastructure.
The 1970 date places production just at the transition between the two Duvalier governments, a detail that creates some ambiguity about whether this was conceived as a tribute to Papa Doc or a inaugural gesture by the son's handlers.
