| Obverse description | The niobium centre, struck in raspberry-red and grass-green, depicts a butterfly with wings spread, above which an atomic symbol is featured; a molecular chain extends from the silver ring into the niobium field. The surrounding silver ring presents a series of progressively magnified details of the butterfly motif: a section of the wing surface, an image as seen under a light microscope, a further magnification under an electron microscope, cellular structures, and finally a cell with its nucleus rendered in fine relief.
