The British North Borneo Chartered Company — granted its royal charter in 1881 — was one of the last chartered companies with genuine governing authority, administering what is now Sabah until the Japanese occupation of 1941. Its banknotes functioned as the territory's legal tender, backed by the company's commercial operations rather than a colonial treasury. The $25 denomination was the highest in this series, and at that face value it would have seen limited daily circulation — this was a merchant and planter note, not a market note.
Pick 17 is among the scarcer survivors of the company's final currency series before Japanese forces effectively ended the chartered administration for good.
