The trireme depicted on this issue references one of antiquity's most studied yet poorly understood vessels — ancient sources describe their speed and maneuverability in detail, but the precise arrangement of the three rowing banks remained genuinely contested among scholars until the experimental reconstruction of the Olympias in the 1980s, a project funded by the Greek government that confirmed several long-debated theories about oar geometry and crew positioning.
