Part of a broader commemorative program honoring WWII aircraft, this issue marks the Me 262 — the world's first operational jet-powered fighter, deployed by the Luftwaffe from mid-1944. Allied bombing of fuel supplies and trained pilot shortages crippled its operational effectiveness far more than any aerial countermeasure; it was never produced in numbers sufficient to alter the air war's outcome.
