The Australian Sovereign series revived a denomination dormant since Australia struck sovereigns for circulation under Imperial coinage arrangements — the last being produced at the Perth Mint in 1931, when the gold standard's collapse ended Commonwealth sovereign production entirely. This 2022 issue pairs the revival with Elizabeth II's Platinum Jubilee, marking seventy years on the throne, a reign that outlasted twelve Australian prime ministers and saw the Perth Mint transition from a Royal Mint branch to a Western Australian government enterprise. The platinum flash over a gold flan is a production choice driven by the jubilee theme rather than any monetary or metallurgical necessity.
