| Opis awersu | The full Arms of the Commonwealth of the Bahamas occupy the central field, depicting a shield charged with a galleon in full sail beneath a rising sun, supported by a marlin to the left and a flamingo to the right, both standing on a grassy compartment. Above the shield rests a crested helmet surmounted by a conch shell and decorative mantling. A scrolled banner below the supporters bears the national motto in three parts: FORWARD, UPWARD, ONWARD and TOGETHER. The circumferential legend COMMONWEALTH OF THE BAHAMAS arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 1979 inscribed in the lower field. The entire design is framed by a continuous beaded border. |

The Bahamian Parliament, established in 1729, is one of the oldest legislative assemblies in the Western Hemisphere — predating American independence by nearly half a century. The 250th anniversary fell in 1979, the same year the islands were navigating the economic and political turbulence that followed independence from Britain in 1973. Proof-quality commemoratives of this type were struck primarily for collector export, a revenue strategy the Bahamas leaned on heavily during this period through the Franklin Mint and similar contract arrangements.
