The Chartered Mercantile Bank of India, London and China was one of the so-called "exchange banks" operating under Royal Charter — distinct from the presidency banks and answerable to British commercial rather than colonial administrative interests. By 1880 the bank had been operating in the Far Eastern trade corridors for over three decades, with its Hong Kong branch handling much of the note-issuing business in this denomination. The 25-dollar unit was a practical figure for large merchant transactions, not retail circulation.
The bank was absorbed into the Chartered Bank of India, Australia and China in 1893 following a merger, making the entire pre-merger note series effectively obsolete within thirteen years of this issue date. Surviving specimens are scarce partly for that reason — redemption was efficient.
