Andorra lacked any formal coinage of its own until 1982, operating for centuries under a dual co-principality arrangement that left currency matters entirely to France and Spain. The 1990s gold issues — of which this is one — were produced primarily for the collector market, timed to coincide with Andorra's various diplomatic and economic milestones as the principality worked to formalize its international standing.
