Andorra lacked its own coinage for centuries, operating under a currency arrangement shaped by the 1278 pareatge that divided sovereignty between the Bishop of Urgell and the Count of Foix — eventually inherited by France. The 1992 collector issues, including this piece, were struck as Andorra was negotiating its first formal customs agreement with the European Community, signed that same year. The timing was deliberate.
