The Turks and Caicos Islands adopted the crown as its currency unit in 1969, pegged to the US dollar at a rate of one crown to one dollar. By the late 1970s the territory was producing large-format silver crowns almost entirely for the collector market — circulation was effectively dollarized in practice, and these issues were never intended to pass as everyday change.
