The removal of IND:IMP: — Indiae Imperator, Emperor of India — from the royal title followed Indian independence in August 1947, but Canadian dies took time to update. The 1948 issue is dramatically scarcer than surrounding dates because the Royal Canadian Mint was still working through existing obverse dies when the changeover order arrived, producing a very limited run before corrected dies came into service. Collectors have chased the 1948 date for decades as a result.
