The shift to .800 fine silver in 1920 — down from the .925 sterling standard used since Confederation — was driven by postwar silver prices that made the older alloy genuinely unprofitable to coin. Canada was not alone; Britain made similar reductions around the same period. The 1936 dot issue within this series remains one of the most storied varieties in Canadian numismatics, with only a handful of confirmed specimens struck as record pieces after George V's death while Edward VIII coinage was being prepared.
