Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's 2009 Olympic coin program ahead of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, this issue was among a series of twelve 25-cent circulation pieces released to build public anticipation for the Games. Sledge hockey — a Paralympic sport Canada had dominated internationally — was included alongside able-bodied disciplines, an unusual acknowledgment of Paralympic athletics in a mainstream circulation coinage program.
The nickel plated steel composition replaced the earlier pure nickel standard after 2000, driven by rising commodity costs.
