Part of the Royal Canadian Mint's 2009 Olympic coin program ahead of the Vancouver 2010 Winter Games, this issue was among a series of twelve 25-cent circulation pieces released to build public anticipation for the Games. The nickel plated steel composition replaced the earlier pure nickel standard after 2000, driven by rising commodity costs.
