The 1953 date marks the transition year in which two distinct varieties exist — the "No Shoulder Fold" and "Shoulder Fold" types — resulting from a mid-year modification to the Gilick effigy after the Royal Mint in London revised the master dies. The shoulder strap detail, absent on early strikes, was added to improve definition. Both varieties were struck at Ottawa, and the distinction is now a standard diagnostic in Canadian series collecting.
Silver content was reduced from .800 to .500 in 1967, making this the last generation of Canadian quarters struck to the higher silver standard established in 1920.
