| Obverse description | Bare-headed effigy of Queen Elizabeth II facing right, modeled by Mary Gillick at approximately 27 years of age and wearing a laurel wreath. The portrait is rendered in low relief with fine detail to the facial features and hair. The circular legend reads ELIZABETH II DEI GRATIA REGINA around the upper periphery. Two principal varieties exist: the 1953 no-shoulder-fold type with a high-relief effigy lacking a defined fold at the shoulder strap, and the modified shoulder-fold portrait introduced later in 1953 and used through 1964. |

| Reverse description | Central device features a left-facing caribou head, the design attributed to Emanuel Otto Hahn, set within the field. The legend CANADA arcs across the upper periphery, while the denomination 25 CENTS is inscribed below the caribou motif. The date appears in the lower right field. A small mintmark or designer's initial may appear to the right of the date on certain issues. The overall composition is bold and heraldic, consistent with Canadian coinage conventions of the period. |
