Additional information

Guyana's first national coinage was issued in 1967, the year after independence from Britain, replacing the Eastern Caribbean dollar series that had circulated across the British West Indies as a colonial holdover. The Bank of Guyana took over issuance from the British Caribbean Currency Board, making these early strikes a direct artifact of the country's monetary break from London.

The series ran through a period of significant economic turbulence, including nationalization of the bauxite and sugar industries under Forbes Burnham's cooperative socialist government during the 1970s.
