San Lorenzo de Calatrava is a small municipality in the Ciudad Real province of Castile-La Mancha, and like hundreds of similar towns across Republican Spain, its local council issued low-denomination paper during the Civil War to address the acute shortage of small coinage. Silver and copper had disappeared from circulation almost immediately after July 1936 — hoarded, melted, or simply withdrawn — leaving local commerce functionally paralyzed without some improvised substitute.

The Garrido Morin cataloguing reference places this among the lesser-documented municipal issues, and surviving examples are genuinely uncommon given the short operational window most ayuntamientos had before regional supply chains normalized or collapsed entirely.
