Planes del Montsià is a small agricultural municipality in the Baix Ebre comarca of Tarragona, and this 25 céntimos note is a product of the chaotic local currency emergency that swept Republican-held Catalonia from mid-1936 onward. With coin hoarding paralyzing small transactions almost immediately after the military uprising, hundreds of Catalan municipalities — including the most obscure — were authorized under a Generalitat decree to issue their own emergency fractional paper.
