Planes del Montsià is a small agricultural municipality in the Baix Ebre comarca of Tarragona, and this 25 céntimos note is a product of the chaotic local currency emergency that swept Republican-held Catalonia from mid-1936 onward. With coin hoarding paralyzing small transactions almost immediately after the military uprising, hundreds of Catalan municipalities — including the most obscure — were authorized under a Generalitat decree to issue their own emergency fractional paper. Turró catalogues over two thousand such local issues.
Notes from villages this small typically survived in tiny quantities, printed on whatever stock the local council could source.
