Cornudella de Montsant is a small municipality in the Priorat comarca of Tarragona, and like hundreds of other Catalan and Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local government stepped in to fill a severe shortage of small-denomination coins — metallic coinage having been hoarded, melted down, or simply stopped being minted as the Republican monetary system buckled under wartime pressure. These locally issued paper vouchers, known as *moneda local* or *paper moneda*, were legal only within the issuing municipality's jurisdiction and generally worthless outside it.

Turró's catalogue remains the standard reference for this material, documenting over a thousand distinct emissions from Catalonia alone between 1936 and 1939.
