Opmerkingen

Castellar de Santiago is a small municipality in the province of Ciudad Real, and like hundreds of similarly sized towns across Republican-held Spain, it issued its own fractional paper currency during the Civil War after the withdrawal of metallic coin from circulation. The Consejo Municipal emissions of 1937 were purely local instruments — theoretically non-negotiable outside the town itself, and backed by nothing more than the authority of the local council.

Thick card stock was the norm for these emergency fractions, partly because lithographic card held up better in daily market use than thin paper, and partly because it was harder to counterfeit convincingly with available materials.
