Albatera was a small agricultural municipality in the province of Alicante, and like hundreds of similarly sized Spanish towns during the Civil War, its local council issued emergency fractional currency when Republican-zone coinage disappeared from circulation almost entirely by 1937. These municipal issues — produced locally, often on whatever card stock or paper was at hand — were strictly for use within the issuing town and had no standing elsewhere.
