The date '1913' appears in the lower field, with the word 'ESSAI' inscribed to the lower left and the engraver's signature 'H. GUIS' to the lower right. A beaded inner border runs concentrically around the hole, while a finely milled outer border frames the entire design. The composition and lettering reflect the Art Nouveau-influenced typological trials proposed for French holed coinage of the early Third Republic. |
