Honduras issued a series of pattern coinage in 1871 as the nascent republic worked through proposals for a standardized decimal currency system, and very few of these trial pieces were struck in any format. The gold-plated copper specimens like this one were likely produced for official presentation or approval rather than any consideration of actual circulation metal.
KM#Pn15a distinguishes this copper-core variant from the related Pn15, presumably struck in silver or a purer alloy — the lettered suffix indicating a secondary composition trial within the same design submission.
