The Banco Nacional de Nicaragua was unusual among Central American institutions of its period — it functioned simultaneously as a commercial bank and the de facto central bank, a dual role that persisted until the Banco Central was established in 1961. This 25 Centavos de Córdoba fractional note dates from a period when Nicaragua's monetary system was still finding its footing after the córdoba replaced the peso in 1912 and the country emerged from years of US financial supervision under the 1917 Knox-Castillo Treaty arrangements.

Hamilton Bank Note Company handled relatively few Latin American contracts compared to rivals like ABNC — their involvement here is worth noting.
