Ecuador dollarized in 2000, abandoning the sucre entirely, which left the country in the unusual position of using U.S. currency without the ability to issue paper money of its own. These small-denomination stainless steel pieces, sometimes called "monedas de recordación," fill that gap as legal tender for small transactions while functioning partly as national identity tokens. Alberto Spencer, the Uruguayan-Ecuadorian striker widely considered the greatest header of a football in South American history, led Barcelona SC Guayaquil to multiple titles in the 1960s and 70s.
