Central design features a full-length figure of legendary Ecuadorian footballer Alberto Spencer in playing kit, depicted mid-stride and controlling a football at chest height. To the right of the figure, a small rendition of the Ecuadorian coat of arms appears in the field. The circumferential legend REPÚBLICA DEL ECUADOR arcs along the upper rim, while the honoree's name ALBERTO SPENCER curves along the lower rim, both separated by a series of five-pointed stars flanking the lower inscription. |

Ecuador dollarized in 2000, abandoning the sucre entirely, which left the country in the unusual position of using U.S. currency without the ability to issue paper money of its own. These small-denomination stainless steel pieces, sometimes called "monedas de recordación," fill that gap as legal tender for small transactions while functioning partly as national identity tokens. Alberto Spencer, the Uruguayan-Ecuadorian striker widely considered the greatest header of a football in South American history, led Barcelona SC Guayaquil to multiple titles in the 1960s and 70s.
