| Reverse description | A full-length portrait of King Sejong the Great (r. 1418–1450) is depicted seated in three-quarter view upon a throne, attired in traditional royal court robes and a gat headpiece, holding an open book in both hands. Vertical columns of Hangul characters flank the enthroned figure on both sides, representing aspects of his legacy including the creation of the Hangul alphabet. The legend 'REPUBLIC OF KOREA' arcs along the upper periphery in Latin capitals, while 'KING SEJONG THE GREAT' is inscribed along the lower periphery. The regnal dates '1397 - 1450' appear in the exergual area beneath the throne. |
