The Kipper und Wipper crisis of 1621–1622 was one of the most destructive currency debasements in German history. Princes across the Holy Roman Empire — Brandenburg-Ansbach among them — raced to mint debased small-denomination coins, collect good silver in exchange, then watch neighboring territories absorb the losses. Joachim Ernest participated aggressively in this scramble, issuing large quantities of lightweight Kreuzer coinage through a network of hastily licensed mints operating well outside normal imperial standards.
The inflation collapsed with remarkable speed. By late 1622 the bubble had burst, leaving ordinary subjects holding worthless copper-heavy coins and most issuing authorities quietly distancing themselves from the episode.
