Obverse description Bare-headed bust of the river-god Strymon facing right, rendered in a naturalistic Hellenistic style with visible drapery at the shoulder. The portrait displays characteristic features of a mature male deity, with the head slightly inclined. The flan is irregular and the surface shows patination consistent with ancient bronze coinage.

Additional information

This bronze was struck under Perseus, the last king of Macedonia, during the years leading to the catastrophic defeat at Pydna in 168 BC — the battle that ended the Antigonid dynasty and resulted in Perseus being paraded through Rome in Aemilius Paullus's triumph. The coin type associating Perseus with his father Philip V was a deliberate dynastic statement issued during a reign consumed by the gathering confrontation with Rome.

Perseus died in Roman custody at Alba Fucens, probably around 166 BC.
