The 2½ Pahlavi gold coin was struck at the Tehran Mint during the final years of Mohammad Reza Shah's reign, a period when oil revenues had flooded Iran with enough foreign exchange to sustain a serious domestic gold coinage program. By 1978, as revolutionary pressure mounted, many of these coins were quietly converted into private hoards — gold leaving circulation not through wear but through fear. The Tehran Mint itself was subject to disruption in late 1978 and ceased normal operations before the February 1979 revolution concluded.
Fr#100 places this piece in Friedberg's well-documented Pahlavi series. Post-revolutionary Iran officially demonetized imperial coinage almost immediately.
