The circular legend REPUBLICA PORTUGUESA arcs around the upper periphery, with the date 1964 flanked by two small stars at the base. The word PROVA (meaning 'Pattern' or 'Proof') is incuse-stamped in the left field, identifying this as a trial piece. The design is rendered in high relief with crisp, detailed rigging and hull elements characteristic of Portuguese numismatic art of this period. |

| Opis rewersu | The central field displays the Portuguese national coat of arms: the traditional shield comprising five inescutcheons (quinas) arranged in a cross pattern, each bearing five roundels, set within a larger shield bordered by seven castles. The denomination 2$50 is rendered in large numerals below the shield, with the escudo sign incorporated as the decimal separator. Six six-pointed stars are symmetrically arranged around the shield in the field. The designer's and engraver's credits — MARTINS BARATA DEL. and M.
