| Beschrijving voorzijde | At centre, a sculpted protea flower bud with two flanking leaves rises from a short stem, rendered in high relief against a polished dark field. The engraver's initials 'KG' appear incuse beneath the flower. The legend 'SOUTH AFRICA' curves along the upper periphery in raised Latin capitals, bordered by a beaded inner rim. The date '2008' is positioned in the lower field, flanked by two small decorative floral ornaments. The design was originally created by George Kruger Gray and is characteristic of the classic South African decimal series. |

| Beschrijving keerzijde | The reverse features a polar projection map of Antarctica occupying the central field, with the continent rendered in relief and surrounded by a detailed grid of latitude and longitude lines. The inscriptions 'ANTARTICA', 'SOUTH POLE', 'SANAE IV', 'SOUTH AFRICA', 'INDIAN OCEAN', 'SOUTH ATLANTIC OCEAN', and 'SOUTH PACIFIC OCEAN' are distributed across the field in raised Latin lettering. The large denomination '2 1/2 C' is prominently displayed in the upper right portion of the design. The engraver's initials 'MJS' appear at the lower right periphery. The composition commemorates South Africa's participation in the International Polar Year. |
