| Popis líce | The national coat of arms of Ecuador occupies the central field, depicting a condor with outstretched wings perched atop an oval shield, within which a maritime scene with Mount Chimborazo and a steamship is rendered in relief. The shield is flanked by four national flags and surmounted by the condor, with fasces and a palm branch visible at the base. The circular legend REPUBLICA DEL ECUADOR runs along the upper periphery in raised Latin lettering, bordered by a beaded rim. The date 1928 appears in the lower exergue beneath the coat of arms. |

Ecuador's 1928 coinage reform introduced nickel fractional pieces to replace the older silver-based system, contracting production to the Philadelphia Mint. The 2½ centavos denomination is arithmetically awkward by design — it corresponded to a specific subdivision of the sucre under the decimal system that made practical sense for small-market transactions in a commodity economy still pricing goods in fractions inherited from colonial usage.
Philadelphia struck the entire issue that year, with no domestic mint involved.
