Luiz I's 2000 Reis was struck across two decades with no single dramatic event driving its issue — it was workhorse coinage for a kingdom increasingly dependent on Brazilian gold that had long since stopped flowing. Portugal's monetary position through the 1870s and 1880s was fragile enough that the Cortes debated abandoning the real-denominated system entirely in favor of full metrication, a reform that would not arrive until the escudo replaced the real in 1911.
