Medellín received its official founding charter — the "Título de Ciudad" — in 1675, making this 1975 issue a precise tricentennial commemoration. The Banco de la República produced the coin as part of a broader pattern of gold commemoratives it issued throughout the 1970s, a decade when Colombia's central bank leaned heavily on precious metal issues to mark national anniversaries while the country's circulating coinage was entirely base metal.
Mintage was low by design. These pieces were sold directly to collectors and never entered circulation.
