Struck to mark the second inauguration of President Ma Ying-jeou, who took office for his final term in May 2012 on a platform of cross-strait economic engagement. His first term had produced the landmark Economic Cooperation Framework Agreement with Beijing in 2010 — the closest formal economic arrangement between the two governments since 1949. The Central Mint issued this piece in fine gold at one troy ounce, a format reserved for the most politically significant commemoratives in Taiwan's modern series.
