Sweden does not regularly strike gold coins for circulation, and this issue was produced specifically to mark Carl XVI Gustaf's thirtieth year on the throne — a reign that began in September 1973 when he acceded at age 27 following the death of his grandfather Gustaf VI Adolf. The 2,000 kronor face value is nominal; Sveriges Riksbank priced these well above melt from the outset, and they were sold directly to collectors rather than released through banking channels.
Mintage was tightly controlled, keeping survival numbers low relative to most modern Swedish commemoratives.
