This piece reproduces the gold florin issued under Sigismund of Luxembourg, who ruled Hungary from 1387 until his death in 1437 — one of the longest reigns in medieval Hungarian history and a period during which the florin became a dominant trade currency across Central Europe. The original coins were struck to the Florentine weight standard, a deliberate policy to maximize their acceptance in international commerce. Hungary's abundant gold deposits from Transylvanian mines made such ambition credible.
