São Tomé e Príncipe's late-1990s commemorative program leaned heavily on Iberian historical themes, a nod to five centuries of Portuguese colonial administration that ended only in 1975. This particular issue honors the Spanish 5 Pesetas — the *duro* — a coin that anchored everyday commerce in Spain from the mid-nineteenth century until peseta coinage was retired ahead of euro adoption in 2002.
The program had no pretense of circulation; these were frankly collector pieces sold into the European numismatic market.
