Wieniawski died in Moscow in 1880 at 44, his health destroyed by years of relentless touring despite a heart condition his doctors had warned would kill him — and it did. The National Bank of Poland has issued numerous gold commemoratives in this format honoring Polish composers and performers, but Wieniawski's international stature arguably outpaced his domestic recognition during his lifetime; he spent far more of his career in Brussels, St. Petersburg, and on American concert tours with Anton Rubinstein than in Poland itself.
