Raqymjan Qoshqarbaev was one of the Soviet soldiers who raised a flag over the Reichstag in Berlin on May 1, 1945 — a moment Soviet propaganda competed fiercely to define and claim. The official Soviet narrative long elevated Yegorov and Kantariya as the sole flag-raisers, leaving Qoshqarbaev's role largely unacknowledged for decades. Kazakhstan has worked systematically since independence to restore his place in the historical record, and the centenary of his birth provided the occasion for this issue.
