Issued in 2009 to mark the bicentennial of Gogol's birth, this coin belongs to a broader Russian commemorative program that has long used precious-metal issues to rehabilitate and celebrate figures whose Soviet-era reputations were complicated. Gogol himself died in 1852 in circumstances that remain disputed — severe self-starvation following a spiritual crisis under the influence of a fanatical priest, or illness, depending on which account one credits.
