The eagle is depicted without a shield on its breast, consistent with the Bank of Russia's standard institutional device. The denomination legend ДВЕСТИ РУБЛЕЙ arcs along the upper periphery within a beaded inner circle, while the issuer name БАНК РОССИИ is inscribed along the lower inner arc. Issued in 2009 to mark the bicentennial of Gogol's birth, this coin belongs to a broader Russian commemorative program that has long used precious-metal issues to rehabilitate and celebrate figures whose Soviet-era reputations were complicated. Gogol himself died in 1852 in circumstances that remain disputed — severe self-starvation following a spiritual crisis under the influence of a fanatical priest, or illness, depending on which account one credits.
